How much do fence contractors charge in Salt Lake City?

Why there is no flat per-foot price, what actually moves fence installation cost in Salt Lake City, and how I build an honest estimate.

How much do fence contractors charge to install a fence in Salt Lake City? Most people want one per-foot number, and it does not work that way. Your yard, your soil, the number of gates, and the local rules all move the price. Here is what actually drives the cost, and how I build an honest estimate.

Why fence price per foot is not a fixed number

Price per linear foot is really an average of about a hundred smaller decisions: material, post depth, number of gates, slope, and how easy the site is to reach. Change one and the crew's time changes with it. Two homes on the same Salt Lake City street can want the same style fence and still need very different amounts of work.

That is why three estimates come back with a big gap. Usually one bid sets deeper footings, another skips hauling the old fence, and a third assumes there is nothing to remove. You are not always comparing the same job. An online per-foot average is a reality check on the range to expect, nothing more. The only real number comes from someone walking your property, checking slope and soil, and measuring with a tape.

Every yard is different. Grade, soil, and access all change the labor before a single board goes up.

What drives fence installation costs

Material is the biggest thing you control. Chain link, wood, vinyl, ornamental iron, and composite each take different labor, hardware, and post spacing. A few specifics set the cost here in the Salt Lake Valley:

  • Rocky or clay-heavy soil slows the digging.
  • Slopes add labor, since panels have to be stepped or racked.
  • Each gate is its own small build, with its own framing, hardware, and deeper posts.
  • If equipment cannot reach the yard, we dig the holes by hand.
  • Old posts set in concrete are their own removal job.

Permits and HOA rules matter too. In Salt Lake City, installing a fence requires a permit from Building Services, and an HOA can cap the height, the material, and which side faces the street. I check both before I quote, because building a fence twice is the most expensive way to do it.

Then there is our weather. Freeze-thaw winters push shallow posts out of the ground, so I set posts two feet deep in concrete, and gate posts deeper. Good footings are where plumb, level, and square really begin. You can see how a job runs from first post to final walk on our fence installation page, and everything I build as your Salt Lake City fence contractor.

Cost differences between fence materials

Labor shifts a little from job to job. Material shifts a lot. Here is the short version for a valley yard:

  • Chain link is the least expensive, good for a dog run or side yard, and it holds up in wind.
  • Wood (cedar) sits in the middle, looks warm, and takes any stain, but it needs staining or sealing every few years.
  • Vinyl is low upkeep and usually less than composite, with a garden hose as the whole maintenance plan.
  • Aluminum and ornamental iron cost more and last a long time, and you can see through them.
  • Composite sits at the top of the range for a woodgrain look with little upkeep.

The cheapest material on day one is not always the cheapest over fifteen years. And a suspiciously low bid is almost always hiding shallow posts, so ask what depth the posts are set to before you sign. If you are weighing woodgrain options, our composite fencing pros and cons lays out that trade in full.

How I build your estimate

On site, here is what I walk through before I write anything down:

  • Confirm property lines and setbacks, then measure the real run.
  • Check slope, soil, and obstacles like trees, utility lines, and sprinklers.
  • Review city code and HOA height rules.
  • Count the gates and size the posts and footings for each.
  • Include old-fence removal and cleanup.
  • Price the materials you actually pick, not an average.

You get an itemized number in writing, and it does not move once we agree. Skip the online guesswork calculators and get a real read on your yard. I answer every call the same day. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a fence in Salt Lake City? +

There is no flat per-foot price. Your total depends on the material, total footage, slope, soil, the number of gates, site access, and whether an old fence has to come out. Two yards of the same size can need very different amounts of digging and framing. The only accurate number comes from measuring the actual fence line, which is why we quote every job at a free on-site estimate.

How much does a fence cost per foot? +

Per-foot pricing is really an average of about a hundred smaller decisions: material, post depth, gate count, slope, and access. Treat an online per-foot number as a rough range to sanity-check a bid, not an exact figure for your yard. Material moves it the most, from chain link at the low end to composite at the high end.

Is it cheaper to build your own fence or hire a contractor? +

DIY can look cheaper until you add up the tools, concrete, permit, and time, and until a post heaves the first winter because it was not set deep enough. In Utah, posts set two feet deep in concrete are what keep a fence plumb for years, and a contractor also builds to the city's permit and code requirements. If you want it done once, hiring out often costs less over the life of the fence.

Why do fence quotes vary so much for the same size yard? +

Each bid can assume different work, not just different prices. One may include deeper gate posts or hauling away the old fence while another skips them. Slope, soil, gate count, and access all change labor time. Compare quotes side by side only once you know what each one includes.

Do HOA rules and permits affect fence height in Salt Lake City? +

Yes. Salt Lake City generally allows fences up to 4 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards, with more detail in the city code, and a fence permit is required before you build. An HOA can add its own limits on height, material, and color. Confirm both early, because fixing a fence that breaks the rules can mean building it twice.

How much does it cost to have 100 feet of fence installed? +

It depends far more on the choices than the footage. A hundred feet of chain link with one walk gate is a very different job from a hundred feet of composite privacy fence and a double drive gate. Material, gate count, slope, and access set the number. Measure the real run first, since most people guess low, and about 100 feet often measures out closer to 150.
